There's a new book coming out that talks about Polio and how much it effected us and how it was really a rich, wealthy man's disease. The cleaner you were, the more apt to get Polio.

But get this...there are still people living in iron lungs and have been there since childhood. Can you even imagine what kind of life that would be?

I'd be begging someone to put me out of my misery.

I grew up on Lake St. Clair in Michigan. This was long before there was control on pollution - which meant that most peoples sewers dumped directly into the canals. We swam in that cess pool every summer. I do remember a certain time frame when everyone's mother forbid us to stick our toes in the water - and it was always around a time of polio outbreaks.

Makes me cringe to think about it now.

Its hard to believe that anyone could still be living in iron lungs as the use of these huge containers were abolished ions ago for safer, more modern methods of assisted breathing...I would be doing the same thing Dianne begging to just die if needing to be encased in one of these dinosaurs..

My SIL had polio as a youngster.
She is now having a lot of trouble moving around.
She's in a study with the Univerty of Washington Medical Center, and they will be trying to help her plus hopefully she can help them at the same time where they can learn what to expect with polio survivors.

According to the author, they are still in use today.

I hope this study helps your SIL, Lynne.

I read where Polio, leoprasy, T-B, and some other diseases thought gone forever have been resurfacing....Like we don't have enough new ones to deal with!
