I don't know about you, but all of my life there have been what I call, for lack of a better word, "touchstones" in my life -- things bring back memories of what I was doing the first time I did "whatever" (the thing or event in question).

For example, every time I bake a cake, my brain flashes back to making a cake in my mother's kitchen in Madison, Wisconsin, circa 1965.

The kitchen radio was on, tuned to its usual NPR station, and while I worked in the very well-equipped baking area of my mother's professional quality kitchen the announcer was educating me about day-to-day life in current day Soviet Union. Remember, this was still the Cold War era...

As a result of hearing the radio discuss the Russians' day-to-day privations, I realized that if I were a teen-aged girl living in Moscow, I probably would not be able to make a cake as easily as I did -- a thing that I took for granted.

I understood for that first time that instead of just opening a cupboard door, selecting a box of mix from several, and then baking a cake, simply by "firing up" the Kitchen Aid mixer, and adding the package contents, plus eggs, water and oil... Were I living in Russia, the grocery stores might only be halls of empty shelves, nothing like our current day supermarkets.

So flash forward almost 50 years: "who woulda thunk" that the simple use of a boxed cake mix would STILL evoke that memory in me?

Here's a link to a great article by Ann Voorhees Baker that tells a similar story. For her, the talisman is her Cutco brand kitchen knives.

Is there anything you do that similarly brings back some memory -- every time you do it?

What is it that you do, and what memory does it trigger?

Hadn't really thought about this, Anne. I'll have to pay more attention, I guess. My brain is mostly filled with thoughts about preparing for retirement, or what I'm going to write next. :-)

Way too many memories come back to me constantly. Mostly about my mother and times with her since she died when I was 18.

Posted the knife article on FB. Is there a list of member's blogs on here somewhere? I'm always looking for articles to put on my website's FB page and I'm a newbie.

Hi Tina,

We don't publish a list of BWS or NABBW member blogs to my knowledge, but most people who regularly post on BWS will have a link to their blogs in their sign files. You might be able to collect a list of blogs by just reviewing older posts on this site.

Anne,

That's a great idea. I'd rather give a bit of publicity (and Google Love) to a baby boomer instead of some twenty year old who doesn't know much about life and is just rewriting [or swiping] something that came over his RSS feed (I've never used RSS, probably should).

Cheers,
Tina

Oh, to stay on topic, my best memories involve music. I was probably a bit wilder than most... I like to go on Pandora and put on my "Cream" station. If you're too young or you were too busy watching The Monkees on TV, Cream was a 60's group with Eric Clapton. My Cream station has a bit of Hendrix, Led Zep, Dire Straits, Stevie Ray Vaughn, and other guitar-oriented bands.

I also have a Beatles station for when I want something more mellow.

I still can't bake a cake. But... I didn't grow up in Kansas. West Coast life was a little different. Wouldn't give up that really-too-much-fun-to-be-legal era of fabulous rock concerts for anything in the world, unless it would help my kids.

Just wondering what brings back memories with other Boomer Chicks.

Tina PS Women who list their blogs here should use pictures with their posts. Posting a link on Facebook won't get as many hits without a photo. Go to stock.xchng.hu or dot net or go to wikimedia commons or look for creative commons photos at flickr.com. AND, I like to help Boomer Chicks... just because... so if I see a halfway good photo, I'll put your article on Pinterest and you might get some hits from that.

Last thing... for sure.

This is for Laurel. I found a quickie photo for the women's movement - got it from Wikimedia Commons or Wikipedia. And, I put a link to your article here.

It's too hard to do it on Facebook, but it was interesting to remember the days when women were only teachers, nurses, and mommies. You might like the movie Made in Dagenham if you're on Netflix. I had never heard of it until a writer friend wanted to put a review of it on my site. Note: It's almost impossible to understand some of the words in the film because they all have heavy Cockney accents (or some similar accent). Don't worry. You'll love the movie even if you don't hear every word... it's a comedy and you'll understand the plot.

and I'm off...
