I can't tell you how much I enjoyed reading these sumbissions. I didn't have grandparents when I was growing up, so it was great fun to read how boomers felt about those special relationships.

Dotsie...how sad you didn't have grandparents...I bet you'll make a great grandmother some day...you'll be doubly special!

Dee, I don't see it happening for a long time, but I definitely look forward to it. Three of my siblings have grandchildren so it's been fun for me to see all of them in action.

During this past month, the aunt I lunch with nearly every Wed. and I have spoken a lot about family. She didn't know her grandparents (my greats). I came away thinking 'how sad for her.' If it hadn't been for my maternal grandmother (and the aunt above), I don't think I'd have survived... literally.

but, I agree with Dee, you'll make a good one.

I was fortunate to know and spend lots of time with both sets of grandparents and I will never forget them. So different in Ethnic backgrounds, from Italian to Lithuanian. The customs and foods were all so delicious and so different.

Our holidays especually were neat, first to my dads Lithuanian parents house, where we ate...

Then later in the day to my mothers parents home, where we ate Italian... No wonder I love to cook, and eat too unfortunately for me. My childhood revolved around food.

Ross was extremely close to his maternal grandmother too. His parents loved him dearly but they divorced when he was young and there were other marriages and relationships for both parents. He clung to his Nana because she his stable earthly angel.

gims, how lucky you are to still have your aunt to lunch with.

chatty, I hear you about the food. Were there any specific foods you ate on certain holidays? While my FIL dated an Italian woman, we had the best home made pastas for the holidays. It was added to all the traditional foods, so there was even more to eat.
