We have a locally-owned grocery store chain that has a dollar section. I've found $1 jars of jellies/jams that contain sugar and no high fructose corn syrup. REAL stuff!

Also have found large $1 bars chocolate, pkgs of cookies, all sorts of kitchen items.

Don't discard your local grocers' attempt to help the economy. I stay away from "big bad chain stores" as much as possible...and also shop my town's farmer's market!

Our local food co-op has sales every month - certain items stay on sale all month. We usually stock up on sale items (when we can) and then don't have to buy them again for a while. For example, I have enough laundry detergent to last the rest of the year!! The co-op also gives a discount when you shop at certain times during the month. They also send an annual rebate check to members, which is a percentage of our purchases for the year.

I can't remember the last time I was in a national chain food store; and I feel so fortunate to live where there is a food co-op that is locally owned.

Groovy and I go to the co-op; they just had an owners'
appreciation day. Things were on sale and they even had free eats. There's a farmer's market within walking distance of the
co-op, and we go there as well.

We here in Vegas have a dozen or so Dollar Stores and before I shop anywhere else, I go there. I am amazed at what I find there, the quality is excellent aqnd there is just so much. I have cut my grocery costs in half with the same amount of foods.

That is great. I've found excellent items at the dollar stores
so why not shop there. It's a huge help with lowering household
spending.

I use to buy only brand name products and still do with some items but for cleaning items, paper items and many regular items it isn't necessary to buy the brand name which grocery stores sell for many dollars higher. I have tested dozens of canned or jarred things and been unbelievably pleased with the quality and tastes. They have some of the nicest fresh produce I have seen lately too. Now when I go shopping at a Dollar Store I drive 5 of my neighbors there who have changed their mind about shopping there too since I have.

We used to have a local Dollar Store in our little town, but it closed. And our local grocery store became a Pig - as in Piggly Wiggly.

We do have loads of options with farmer's markets, but I am not geared up to shop as early in the day as it seems one has to shop to find them open.

So I shop at the Pig as much as possible, and get the rest of my stuff at the local Wal-Mart. My kids can't believe it, as I used to be categorically against big box stores. But the option is driving at least 15 miles -- and that doesn't seem all that smart either.

Wonder what it takes to get a food co-op set up?

Anne

Here's some info on co-ops and buying clubs:

http://www.coopdirectory.org/

I'll do some more digging to see what I can find.
