What's your favorite "old" movie? - 11/22/03 04:53 AM

the post about jawjaw's article on Gone with the Wind, and meredithbead not liking that movie, got me to wondering - what is everyone's favorite "old" movie???? or enough just all time favorite movie?

We know jawjaw loves Gone with the Wind.

My favorite is Doctor Zhivago. And my next all time favorite is The Princess Bride.

Anyone else?

The Sound of Music for me.
Need to watch Gone With the Wind again. I was too
young to understand it at all when I saw it so was bored I'm afraid. I think I would like it now though.

I too loved Dr. Zhivago. I thought it was so monumental! Just a few weeks ago was the PBS remake of it, also really good.

Probably my FAVORITE favorite is Wizard of Oz. I've seen it practically every year since I was a kid and just never get tired of it. Plus, Judy Garland sings in my key.

My favorite movie from my college days is Orpheo y Euridice, the Brazilian version. Seen it 3 times, which was not that easy to do because it's on tv once every 10 or 15 years...

My current movie-watching is very heavily sci-fi.

Oh Maggie, I wanted to be the first to say The Sound of Music...that's my favorite too! [Big Grin]

I also liked the Wizard of Oz.

Sorry Queen, but I've never watched Gone With The Wind from beginning to end. Do you believe that? Am I still considered an American?

What strikes me funny about this post is I don't recall that many movies, especially at the movie theater.

The ones I recall clearly from my youth are Noah's Ark, The Ten Commandments, and Love Story Love Story. Seems that in high school there were a few moreto add to the list, but the way they crank out movies today amazes me.

Well. One of my favorite tv shows was Andy Griffith, and Donna Reed, Father Knows Best and Leave it to Beaver. One of my most favorite movies is Holiday Inn (?) with Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye. I loved Red Skelton and Carol Burnett, Ed Sullivan, the Sonny and Cher show and The Smothers Brothers. I knew I'd be the Hippy Dippy Weather Lady when I grew up and the old Saturday Night Lives were great but that was 10 or 15 years ago.

Seeing a recipe for 'me' in there? Am I a product of my television watching or what?

Loved Gone With the Wind, Splendor in the Grass, Imitation of Life, A Summer Place, all the old ones. I've gone so retro now, my friends give me little notebooks and picture frames in pink and black. [Smile]

I just saw all of Gone With The Wind last week on TV. It's the first time I've seen it from beginning to (long long movie) end. I have 2 old favorites, #1 Cleopatra with Liz Taylor. #2 The African Queen with Bogart and Hepburn. Of the newer oldies, I went nuts over Mrs. Doubtfire with Robin Williams. What a funny and wonderful entire family film Mrs. Doubtfire is. [Big Grin] [Big Grin]

After Cleopatra came out, my best GF Sue and I practiced practiced practiced until we got the eyeliner down exactly right! For several years thereafter it was Sue and Merry , those two weird girls with the matching Cleopatra eyes. Plus the jewelry was pretty cool too.

Actually, The Quiet Man with John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara is my all time fav....sigh.

Meredith, I love what you all did with the eyebrow thing...how cute!

Louisa---I'm with you girl. I rent OLD movies from the library practically every weekend! I love those things. I always try and get at least one Piroit (the detective series). I love that!

I liked Camelot and bought it recently. One of the movies I saw at the theater and cried my little heart out was Romeo and Juliet. And I like almost anything with Cary Grant in it.

Agree - anything with Cary Grant!

Donna,

I, too, loved Romeo and Juliet! I, too, cried with that one.

Like you, I love Cary Grant and anything he's in. Wasn't he wonderful?

I remember reading a quote he made years before his death..."I've pretended to be someone I've always wanted to be, and became that someone."

Thought that was interesting and insightful.

Loved most of the old Judy Garland movies...Wizard of Oz, Meet Me in St. Louis, Easter Parade and the classic A Star is Born. African Queen is right up there too, as is Philadelphia Story and Guess Who's Coming to Dinner. Tracy and Hepburn were awesome. But Gone With the Wind is probably my all time favorite, and Dotsie, you are not alone...a couple of years ago, I took my best friend to see it for her first time. I was incredulous that there was someone out there that hadn't watched it at least once. Hope you get to see it soon; it is a wonderful movie, and Clark Gable is really yummy!

Re: What's your favorite "old" movie? - 09/04/04 04:43 PM

I'm right there with you ladies, with Cary Grant. I loved "North by North West". I also loved the Rock Hudson and Doris Day movies like "Pillow Talk". One of my favourite movies and books about the USA, was "Cheaper by the Dozen". I know they have made a new version with steve Martin, but I am not interested as the older version was precious.

We got a lot of British shows here in Australia, but also many US ones. I loved the Dick Van Dyke show, My Three Sons, The Honeymooners, Red Skelton. I still remember Rin Tin Tin, Texas Rangers, Lone Ranger, Zorro. We used to act them out but never found a really useful substitute for horses - next door's dog never really recovered emotionally from being saddled one day!

One thing we would never miss was Disneyland. Do you still have that show? As in a modern version?
I guess Annette Funi...cello(sp?)may have changed a little but I remember her as the epitome of beauty!

my favorite old movies happen to be John Wayne movies. I can pop them in the DVD player any time day or night when I'm in the mood for a pick me up or when I just need to relax.

McClintock - can't beat a good chase scene through town
Hatari - I love all the baby elephants!!

Gone With the Wind...all time favorite.
Bette Davis movies...Dead Ringer is great...love those with a twist. Jezebel, DArk Victory, Now Voyager - and that one with Joan Crawford,,can't remember title.

For TV - I'm a TVland addict with the old Leave It to Beaver, Andy Griffith, Dick Van Dyke....

Nice to see this pop back up again.

I like the John Wayne movies, but something a bit more contemporary is still my favorite as well, Steel Magnolias. Good movie. I love Wizard of Oz and try to watch it at least once a year.

My husband loves The Princess Bride. I can't watch it as often as he does, but it's a good story.

Another more contemporary movie I like to watch on a regular basis is Working Girl. I love the Carly Simon tune that plays.

I thought Gone With The Wind was overrated and dull and so fake. Loved Rett Butler though. I like when Carol Burnett walks down the stairs in that curtain rod and drape as a dress, supposedly being Scarlett O'Hara. Funniest thing I have ever seen....

On TV the other night they showed Dolly, Jane and Lilly celebrating the 20th anniversary of the movie Nine To Five....how time flys!

Re: What's your favorite "old" movie? - 04/14/06 02:51 AM

Anthing Cary Grant, Rock Hudson and Doris Day.

Mr. Blandings Builds His dream House, Pillow Talk, Cheaper by the Dozen, Bringing up Baby, Arsnic and Old Lace, The one where Doris was marooned on an island and returns the day before Rock Husdon was to remarry--can't remember the name....Also anything Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn.

Also loved an old black and white movie called Mrs. Mineva or Mrs. Mineva's Rose. Has anyone seen it?

There was also one and I can't remember who was in it or the title, but the gal's feet curled every time this fella kissed her--but her feet didn't curl when she kissed her fiance'. A family member told her that all the women in their family's toes curled right out of their shoes when they kissed the right man. Of course she didn't like this guy and there was a whole comedy plot around getting the two of them together. I can't remember the title--anybody remember it?

I love the old Film Noir genre from the 40's. The characters were always dressed up and they didn't use sex and violence to make up for a bad story. I love Lauren Bacall and Bogey, with their quick-witted wise cracks. I was named after a 40's movie, "Laura", and it wasn't a bad movie either. I also like the Alfred Hitchcock movies.

Leigha, I am a major Sound of Music fan. I loved that movie. That was my favorite childhood movie. Hands down!

But I've never completely watched Gone With the Wind. I know someone is going to throw tomatoes at me, but it's the truth.

Dotsie....you and the Divine Ms M, Meredith ...front and center. Come to my office for a time out. Immediately. You two are grounded until further notice. GWTW is sacred for Pete's sake...next thing you know I'll read where you don't know all the words to Elvis's music....geeish....

I too love the Mrs. Mineva or Mrs. Mineva's Rose movies.

Did you all ever watch The Ghost and Mrs. Muir? The old one, not the second one made. Gawd...I could watch that and The Quite Man (John Wayne/Maureen O'Hara) over, and over, and over!

Why are you crying? It's treatable. Let's talk about it.

Debi, don't cry. I'm a low level ADD. You can live with it and there are meds to help.

I bounce back easily, sometimes with unresolved results. But I have just been through a lot and this was one thing added on top of other things that have been unresolved so far and its more then I can handle all at once. But I know I wont be given more then I can handle, sometimes I wonder when I am in the middle of it without seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.

I will be seening a counserlor (sp) today and have a mental eval. may 8th.

I've got favorites in about every genre but tend to really fall in love with romances, I'm such a mush and love a good cry.

Love Story with Ali MacGraw and Ryan O'Neal - so heartbreaking!

The Quiet Man - just like JJ, love those strong silent types like John Wayne portrays in this one.

Cinderella - the original Rogers and Hammerstein version with Leslie Ann Warren...what dreams are made of!

The Incredible Mr Limpett with Don Knotts has been a favorite since I was a little kid - don't really know why, but I can watch that a couple of times a year and enjoy it every time!

I did about a week ago and although not my type of entertainment it was pretty good. You can't help but walk out of there humming and singing to tunes....very lively show to say the least.

My favorite movie is and was the African Queen with Humphrey Bogart and Katherine Hepburn. Those two alone are giants ad together the screen was just packed with class, and talent not seen too much today. Just my opinion.
