Best Friends Til the End (Or Beyond)

I've got a wonderful "long time best friends" story to share with you. I just read it in the New York Times,

How many of us are lucky enough to have a long time best friend story like this one! I can only dream...

I can only imagine. Over the years of living with an alcoholic, all the friends I had dropped away. Trying to pick up the threads after our divorce just didn't work. So now the friends I have are 'new' friends but no less cherished.

I've heard it said, broken relationships cannot be mended. And I guess that's true. I never had any success at putting them back together. Even when the fault was not mine.

I had a friendship that lasted over 40 years. But the ending was tragic and an experience I'm still paying for.
