I want some cheese with my Whine! - 01/19/05 02:34 AM

Anyone trying to eat healthier? The more I learn, the more I feel I have to go back to the hunter/ gatherer days to actually eat a nutritious, healthy meal.
If I drink diet colas or fat free yogurts, I get Aspartame. If I eat salad, I need to skip the dressing.Too much red meat, not enough fish. Fish has mercury.Don't drink the tap water, bottled water is harmful.Eat more pork, don't feed pork to your dog, it is poison to him.Blue cheese, cottage cheese, skim milk mozza cheese!!!

AGGGgHHHHhh.

I am dressed in my grass skirt(no insects were harmed in the making of this skirt)and coconut knocker covers and on my way to my favorite berry and NUTS grounds.Wish me luck!

chick, I hear you. I live with two diabetics in the house. I'm definitely dying from whatever is in sugar-free food/drinks. [Wink]

We're gonna die from something anyway so I'll just eat like I do now and be happy.

Dianne, your post reminds me of a shell silverstein song. Like all his stuff, it's great. I found the words:::

So youre takin better care of your body,
becoming more aware of your body,
responding to your bodys needs.
Everything you hear and read
about diets, nutrition
and sleeping position.
Detoxifying your system.
Buying machines that they advertise
to help you exercise,
herbs to revitalize
you
if youre traumatized,
soaps that will sanitize,
sprays to deodorize.
Liquids to neutralize
acids and pesticides.
Free weights to maximize
your strength and muscle size.
Shots that will immunize,
pills to re energize you.

But remember that
for all your pain
and gain,
eventually the story ends the same....
Youre still gonna die.

It's so cute. I have it in the car and can't help but laugh at myself every time I play it, especially if I'm on the way to the health food store or to exercise (previously). [Smile]

We begin dying the moment of our birth..

Re: I want some cheese with my Whine! - 02/06/05 07:19 AM

Chick, Isn't that the truth? I've been following a modified version of the Atkins diet for several years in order to stabilize my blood sugar because I have a severe case of hypoglycemia. For awhile, I was eating a lot of fish since I thought that was healthy, but then I developed mercury poisoning!

So I had to switch to red meat and poultry, which can't possibly be healthy because one is full of fat and the other is full of antibiotics. I avoid soy products because I have a thyroid problem and daily doses of soy are not recommended, and I'm allergic to dairy and nuts! What does that leave to eat when I have to have a protein every two hours?

I had to go off all white flour, white sugar, rice, potatoes, carrots, high carb food, junk food -- clearly, no alcohol allowed or even juice. My favorite saying lately is "If there's a Heaven, I'm not going if there's no chocolate!"

If I didn't have the hypoglycemia, I would just forget about all of the other warnings and eat sensibly most of the time. Then occasionally, I would pig out on the fun stuff because, hey, life is short. And we're carnal creatures. Food and drink are one of life's greatest pleasures.

Good luck with your eating plan :-)

Sigrid, if you can't eat any of the stuff that is listed, what in the world is left that you CAN eat? Poor thing, you must be hungry all the time!! I hope it never happens to me: the 3 major food groups are caffeine, nicotine, and sugar. I'd starve!

Well, lets see...this week scratch the fish. Seems we're down to fresh(cough, cough) air and sunshine? Nope, too much of that's not good for us either.
I bet our meredithbead can inform us here. Meredith?
Gosh, Sigrid what can you have, really?

Sigrid GF, you're close to being up the proverbial sh-- crick without a paddle as far as your protein sources. This is the first time I heard that soy affected thyroid, so I really can't comment further on that.

some suggestions:
Organic chicken -- no hormones.
Farm-raised fish -- should be no mercury
For the fish and chicken, go to a health food grocery.

and everyone's favorite:
beans and rice

Can you have eggs?

Re: I want some cheese with my Whine! - 02/08/05 08:01 AM

Hi everyone, Thanks so much for the concern and suggestions. At least I'm keeping my girlish figure ;-) LOL!

I do eat chicken, pork, steak, and hamburger, usually broiled or baked. I have very small servings of peanuts, although they make me sneeze, and I have one serving a day of a half a rye cracker with almond butter. It's delicious but I am allergic to nuts in that they give me sinus problems. Sometimes, I have cheese but I'm trying to cut that out right now. Oh, yeah, for breakfast I have a sugar-free bacon and an egg, although I'm allergic to eggs. Because I meeting all these foods and I'm allergic to, I live on extra strength antihistamines and cortisone, both of which aggravate my blood sugar! And I eat very small TINY portions of whole wheat bread.

Before I went on the bacon and cheese, I lost 15 pounds and was underweight, which is funny because I spent my whole entire lifetime trying to lose 15 pounds. Then doctors wanted to put me on Ensure but it was full sugar! The bacon helped me to gain some weight back.

I have an extremely low carbohydrate tolerance so when I deviate from this diet, I've really pay. But obviously, it's just not a diet that anyone can stick to for any period of time. The other night I ordered a huge container of Chinese food and I'm still paying for my sins :-)

My hypoglycemia was caused by stomach surgery and I can't help but believe that there must be a corrective surgery that will cure it. I've seen several specialists and one surgeon and they say it can't be done but I don't believe it. I've read about different surgeries that should be able to help me. Problem is that you can't refer yourself to a surgeon!

Anyway, sorry for rambling so long. I dictate with a voice program, so often my posts are really long. My apologies!

Love, Sigrid

Re: I want some cheese with my Whine! - 02/08/05 03:37 PM

Sigrid, my prayer for you today is that you can find one thing that you really, really, like to eat; that its good for you and you're not allergic to it. I don't think they're making manna any more, so I'm not sure what it will be. I'm just praying that you'll find it. Is not being able to refer yourself to a surgeon a Canadian thing? Or is that an everywhere thing? And do tell us about this voice dictate program. You talk and it types? How cool is that!?! Don't worry about the ramble. We don't have to *read between the lines* that way [Big Grin]

Sigrid, I have a friend who has all kinds of diet restrictions. She teases that she's allowed water and paper products. [Razz]

Meredith, I knew you w ould come up with suggestions for Sigrid.

Sigrid, do you have Trader Joe's food stores nearby? I bet their staff could help you with your meal planning.
