Our local Humane Society (where I work) just took in 700 dogs and birds from a couple who were breeding and hoarding them. Here's the link to one of the news stories: http://www.kvoa.com/global/story.asp?s=8006272

I know that many of you support local organizations that care for animals, but if you could help the Humane Society of Southern Arizona by sending a donation, or by spreading the word, we could sure use your help. Our capacity is 200 animals, and we just took in another 700 from this case. We were already full to overflowing because we took in animals from the county shelter so they could make room for about 70 or so pit bulls from a dogfighting bust. We need food, bedding, medicine to take care of all these animals, some of whom are sick. Our vets and staff are totally overwhelmed - I spent a good part of the day helping to process these poor pups. The majority are chihuahas; but there are yorkies, chinese crested, and other 'teacup' breeds. Here's a link to the Humane Society web page: http://hssaz.org/

I wouldn't normally ask for help with something like this, but I think this is an extreme case, and it has totally swamped us and stretched our resources.

Yonuh, Alert the media and than round up as many local foster homes as possible for the well dogs, that will leave more room and time for the sick ones. I wish I were closer, my home is always open to babies needing a foster home for awhile. Maybe reach out as well to towns around your own.But use the medcia it does make a good story for them and does wonders to get people to come forward and help out. Its what we do here in Vegas. I hope those horders will be prosecuted to the fullest.

This story is unbelievable to me. I know its for real, I don't mean that...just that I am shocked. I would take one of the dogs myself if I were closer. I hope the local media will be on your side. Heck...make it a national cry!

This did hit the national news - it was on the CNN web site. Today was a 3-ring circus. People were actually fighting in our adoptions lobby because they both wanted the same dog! We finally were able to get the Sheriff's Dept out to direct traffic and restrict access to our offices.

Local media is all over the story; one station is running a telethon that started at 12 noon and will go until 10:30 tonight. Tucson is wonderful in a crisis like this. People have been lining up all day to make donations of money and supplies. We were also able to adopt out some of the healthier dogs, and a rescue organization took about 100 of them. We have even had offers from a pet travel company to help with transporting pets who get adopted from out of town. I am just blown away by the response. People from as far away as Maine have sent donations through our web site. The fact that so many people have stepped up to help has restored my faith in human nature!

This is wonderful news! And like you say, it restores faith in humanity! How wonderful. I guess it will be a while before you can talley it all and see what's what...

Great news! All the animals that were healthy have either been adopted or have gone to other rescue organizations! On both Thursday and Friday we had people lined up around the block wanting to adopt one of the rescued dogs. Now we have to spay and neuter them all before they can go home - 2 or 3 days of around-the-clock surgeries! And we have raised about 1/3 to 1/2 of the $400,000 we estimate it will cost us in supplies, food, medicine, and overtime for everyone.

I'm watching Nancy Grace cover this story tonight...wow...how awful. Those people should never, ever be allowed to have another animal...EVER!!! Bless those folks who are reaching out to all the animals who were affected by their mistreatment. Thanks Yonuh for keeping us up to date on this horrific story.

They did all the things I said they should do and look at the results, wonderful!!! I have been involved more than once in this type of criminal behavior but not to this extent. I just hope all the people adopting these darling babies will give them good homes and are not just caught up in the moment. I didn't hear anything about all the birds they also were hoarding, Yonuh do you know what happened to them?

The birds are not available for adoption at this time - that's all I know at this point. I think they were in much worse shape than the dogs were.

Didn't hear about this one but did hear about The Tiger Ranch Cat Sanctuary! There were more than 600 cats, many sick and dead.

This story turned my stomach!
