Interesting. "Mom 'n pop" businesses will soon be nonexistent across the globe, I suppose. And that's too bad. Some customers
like a personal touch.

I agree Jabber. I love the little niche shops that you find in places. Especially when I'm traveling to another town. They have charm and character. Not "off the rack" or "dime a dozen" items. I get so tired of that stuff. My eyes glaze over in Wally World when I go by their acres of clothes and stuff. Puleaseee...give me the mom and pop's any day. It' so unfair that they can't make a go of it and are squeezed out!

Actually, as people are being laid off, I bet there'll be more small businesses opening up again. Not only that, but some big companies that bought little ones in some cases are selling them off.

DJ,
Not sure I agree. People have lost lots of investment funds.
Starting a business is a huge gamble. I wonder how many folks'
have extra cash they'd be willing to expose to further iffy investments.

Jabber, I guess it depends on the type of business and whether or not you have other options for supporting yourself. There's always a risk involved, but there's also the risk that any of us can be fired at any time.

I started a business 20 years ago with a friend and it only cost us a few dollars to get started. We provide a service and need very minimal equipment. I know people who sell things on line, and it also costs them nothing. If you've got a service or product that people want it's less iffy then some of the retail stores -- these days people around here are spending money improving their homes, so the home improvement guys I've talked to haven't seen even a dip in their business.

DJ,
Yes, they're even building new homes 'round here. And those places are huge. I can't imagine who buys houses that big.
Utilities and property taxes must be more than most yearly incomes. As far as business upstarts go, you're right. If you
have a service to offer, more power to you!

More Dollar Stores are opening up. Has anyone else noticed how much their prices have gone up? Not much is one dollar any more.

I like the fact that greeting cards are fifty cents each at the
dollar tree stores. Cards are so darn expensive elsewhere, I can't hardly believe it. And for those people with a core group of folks they feel obligated to send cards to, the cost can be staggering.

My mother likes to tell people of the time we visited the Dollar Tree and I shouted across the store, "how much is this?" Every one in the store cracked up...the cashier looked at me like I was from Mars. Who knew?
