These Celtic Women and that beautiful violinist are unbelievable. Last year when they were on again for the third year, I bought finally broke down and bought their albums. You just have to listen to these lovely voices. Plus the scenery is very unique.

There is a beauty in Irish girls ..many have dark/black hair and blue eyes..also their skin tone is often fair.In school I saw so often this Celtic appearance.I also like the Irish first names..Aisiling..Maeve..Nimah..Neave
When I was in Dublin and visted the heritage mueseums and saw how seafarers used the ports there must be a varied gene pool..Spainish..French ..Potugese..certainly Scottish and Nordic.
My dentist a young man with darh hair blue eyes has such beautiful eyelashes ..yes his folk are from Ireland
Do the ladies here see a "face" and tie it in with a Nation.

Johnny Cash had roots very near where I live. although diluted by different generations he was alike many men here.
We also have the red haired group from Norse here..

On the flip side, I went to school with a girl named Darleen Flanagan, who was ebony skin-toned. No, her family did not come over on slave ships. Someone simply married an Irisher at some point, and the DNA skipped over any light coloring. lol (She was quite pretty)

My husband has no idea who his bio-dad is, and he looks quite Scottish-English-Irish, pallor and all. My English-Irish mom had a similar pale look, but you can see my Dad's Slavic features in me too, especially the nose part. I decided long ago to keep the nose I was born with, despite the fact other kids made fun of it way back when. Except for the hair tint, I'm keeping what God gave me. lol

I'm not sure that the price matters to poor people who smoke or drink. In that part of our family where government checks are received by young adults, most spend money on booze and cigs first, everything else second. Then they borrow & beg (and maybe even steal) til the next check comes.

As a nurse who seriously smoked for 27 years, I swore to God I would quit when the price of a pack reached a buck, but no, I kept right on smoking. I would pick a used "butt" up off the street if I had to, rather than go through nicotine withdrawal... It was only when a doctor-friend advised me that if I quit smoking before menopause, I would greatly lessen my chances of getting lung cancer. His advice came at a really low point in my life, and I thought if I could get this monkey off my back, maybe I could handle the other serious issues as well. So I took it one day at a time, and 16 years later, so far so good!

Frosty's Winter Wonderland ABCFAM Dec 4, 7:00pm

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation AMC Dec 4, 8pm

Good for you Josie! Bravo for sixteen clean years...
I do believe that smoking is the hardest addiction to break besides overeating. A person can go cold turkey from smoking because they don't need cigarettes BUT one must eat to survive and once started it is hard to control, especially when the food tastes so good. Just one gals opinion, mine!

As with alcohol, I added up the cost of smoking for an entire month, tax included, and compared it to my net income. That seemed to help alot.

No, you do not sound rude or arrogant, Anne. Your smoking to impress your friends years ago as you have described, apparently did not turn into the severe problem others have had to contend with, THANK GOD!!!!!

I've known "recreational substance abusers" who only did alcohol, nicotine, heroin, marijuana, meth, LSD, cocaine, etc on weekends, and they did not seem to progress to physiological addiction status. And then there are many who do become seriously addicted to their drug of choice.

Time and time again over the years, I've heard some heroin addicts say they were eventually able to get straight from heroin, but they were never able to overcome their severe craving for nicotine.

And yes, there are people who rob and assault others to get cigarette money. It's a new day out there, fellow boomers. At $8 bucks a pack, we are talking major money, so young teens who are hooked will invade homes and rob people at gunpoint, not only for crack, but for cigarette money too.

I had nurse friends who never smoked at work yet they were consumed with smoking at home and at social events. And vice-versa. We used to call them "play" smokers. We "serious" smokers had a butt hanging out of our mouth even in the bathroom. In truth, serious smokers are seriously addicted to nicotine, and stopping for them apparently is a whole different ball game then for other types of smokers.

Thank God nowadays there are in-hospital programs and medication to help those who really are committed to quitting this lethal drug.

I will not allow any form of tobacco or any mind-altering substance (like alcohol) served in my home. I did not want my child thinking it was okay to put alcohol or any other dangerous mind-altering substance into his body, and I did not want visitors to think it was okay to drink any form of alcohol in my house, especially since I have no way of telling who is seriously addicted and who is not.

I'm ashamed that I ever smoked, but glad that I was able to find the strength to quit. Other than dealing with loss in my life, quitting smoking is the hardest thing I have ever done.
