Hi ladies.

My boyfriend is caring for his elderly mother. She is in rehab right now, recovering from a hip replacement and then a fall that broke her leg.

Today in a conversation with a doctor, it was mentioned that she'd be on "antibiotics for life." I've never heard of that before. She had an infection about a month ago, but it is now gone.

I'm researching this tonight. If anyone has any insight, knowledge, similar story, etc., I'm greatly appreciate hearing about it.

Thanks!

Whirlwind

Whirlwind not sure if this helps but was just thinking of something said to me when leaving the hospital last August, the last time I had pneumonia. I was given 8 pills, and sent home being told they were very strong antibiotics that would easily clear up my lungs, the infection causing the problem BUT I could only take just the 8 because after that amount the effectivness of the pills would disipate, not work anymore, as my system would be use to them by then. I took the eight, got well, and that was that.
If it were me, I would tell him to get at least two if not more more opinions as to why anyone would have to take antibiotics forever. Also how could they be effective for so long??? Sounds very weird to me...kind of 'quacky,' if you get my drift!

It sounded very strange to us too, Chatty. Over time the drugs do lose their effectiveness.

He is going to ask for a second (and probably third) opinion.

So far I've found nothing on the internet. Articles on the prophylactic use of antibiotics details experiences like yours - of short duration for a specific purpose and time.

My parents have been gone for a long time. I'd forgotten what it was like trying to take care of an elderly person.

Thank you for responding!

WW

You are kind to be concerned for your boyfriend's mom. I'm sure he appreciates the support.

I've never heard of being on antiobiotics for life. You're wise to research and get another opinion.
